WARMUP:  10 minutes of Vocab: you are encouraged to work with friends/partners.

IN CLASS:  Independent Reading.  If absent, make up 35 minutes of reading.

NEW COMMENT QUESTION FOR YOUR LOG:  How are you liking your book so far?  What is working or not working for you?

STANDING LEARNING TARGETS FOR INDEPENDENT READING:  As a result of the work you are doing you should be able to

  1. Set goals for reading stamina and fluency (get better at reading for longer periods of time and read more skillfully)
  2. Use strategies to find “just the right books”
  3. Engage in discussion with other readers (we’ll be doing some of that on Friday)
  4. Develop fluency by connecting to the narrative voice (that’s a fancy way of saying “become a more skillful reader by paying attention to the author’s tone)
  5. Develop theories about the author’s purpose and identify central ideas (why is the author writing the book?  What are the main ideas the author is trying to get across).
  6. Make connections and analyze the author’s insights.
  7. Analyze the GENRE via the reading experience.
  8. Examine how conflicts and character choices impact theme development.
