FIRST NEW SLIDE:  Make an internal title slide CHAPTERS 3-5

NEXT SLIDE:  Discuss as a group–what characters are you relating to the most so far?  What characters don’t you like so much.  Summarize discussion/who said what on the slide.  (5 minutes MAX)

NEXT SLIDE:  What things does the capitol do to maintain control over the people?  How are we supposed to feel about that?  (5-7 minutes)

NEXT SLIDE:  How are the contestants prepped for the games?

NEXT SLIDE:  What comparisons are you seeing between the Games and our reality TV?

  • IN CLASS: Working in groups we are going to create a study guide slide show for the book.
  • TITLE SLIDE
  • SLIDE 1: Pretend you have a friend who didn’t read. How might you summarize just the essentials of Chapters 1 and 2 to them? (Bullet points are fine–try to stay under 75 words)
  • SLIDE 2: Pretend you are making a Disney-style animated film version of the book. What animal would you use to represent each of the following characters? (Katniss, Gale, Peeta, Primrose, Effie Trinket, Haymitch). For each, briefly explain WHY you chose the animal you chose?
  • SLIDE 3: Create a list of the elements of DYSTOPIA that we see in Chapters 1 and 2
  • SLIDE 4: What are two direct quotes from the first two chapters that support idea that District 12 is a DYSTOPIA. Cite them in MLA Style . EXAMPLE: “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy — they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together and let other people clean up the mess they made. . . ” (Fitzgerald 187-188).
