DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  1. What does the “drowning” incident George relates to Slim tell us about George and Lennie’s relationship.
  2. What is the world of the ranch like?  (who/what does well there.  What is a recipe for failure)?
  3. How are we supposed to feel about Slim?  Are we supposed to like him or not like him.?
  4. What happens to Curley’s dog?  Do you think that foreshadows the fate of any other character.

TUESDAY FEB. 7

LEARNING TARGETS:  you should be able to explain

  • The definition of FORESHADOWING in your own words
  • Identify key examples of FORESHADOWING from Chapter Two of “Of Mice and Men.”

GROUP ACTIVITY: (you’ll need to take notes, so have a writing utensil and your notebook ready to go).

    • Who is he?
    • What is his function?
    • One good quote for that character.
  • GROUP 1: The Stable Buck
    • How’d he get hurt?
    • What’s his function?
    • One good quote for that character.
  • GROUP 2: Curley
    • What’s his background?
    • What’s his personality like?
    • One good quote for that character.
  • GROUP 3:  Slim
    • Who is he?
    • How does Steinbeck seem to want us to feel about him
    • One good quote for that character.
  • GROUP 4: Curley’s Wife
    • Pretend you met her under similar circumstances as George and Lennie: how would you describe her to your best friend?
    • One good quote for that character.
  • GROUP 5: GEORGE AND LENNIE
    • How does their situation change from the beginning to the end of the chapter?
    • One good quote that explains their situation?

In your group:  discuss your answer to your character question.

After we switch, we’ll have at least one member of each group in the new letter groups.  Share your group’s analysis of your character with your letter group.  By the end of the activity, your notes should give you a breakdown on all characters.
