TRANSCENDENTALISM PAPER:  Choose a major theme of Transcendentalism and explain how it is developed in Dead Poet’s Society AND two of the following writings

• Emerson “Nature”
• Emerson “Self-Reliance”
• Thoreau “Walden”
• Thoreau “Civil Disobedience”
• Whitman “The Learn’d Astronomer”

 

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR YOU TO SHOW US IN THIS PAPER

1. That you understand elements of transcendentalism and show how it applies and connects to the world outside of the texts we read.
2. That you can identify a theme and support it with evidence from multiple texts.
3. That you can organize and express your thoughts in essay format.

 

FORMAT: 

• Typed, using MLA Format (12-point font, 1-inch margins, MLA page headers)
  • Include MLA works-cited page

 

• DEADLINES:
  • Draft due for peer editing:  Start of class 10/31
  • First Draft Due to C.E. Oct. 31 (Turn in to classroom)
  • Final Draft Due:  NOVE7  (Printed Hard Copy)

IF ABSENT: ACTIVITIES:  IN CLASS WE READ AND TRANSLATED A BUNCH OF EMERSON PASSAGES FROM “SELF RELIANCE.”  There’s a version of it at classroom if you want to work before you return.  In class we worked with a hard copy so we could mark it up and annotate.

3. Be able to explain how Walt Whitman’s poem The Learn’d Astronomer reflects the ideas of Transcendentalism.

TUESDAY:  In class did a practice excercise for the Poetry timed writing.  Analyzed a sample, talked about what it did well, how it did that.  You are allowed to use the sample as a guide during the writing.

WEDNESDAY:  Took the timed writing.

LEARNING TARGET:  By the end of class you should be able to explain

1. The difference between these two questions;
   1. Analyze the theme of the poem and identify some poetic devices the poet uses.
   2. Analyze the theme of the poem and explain how the poet uses poetic devices to develop that theme.
2. How to properly cite poetic material in an essay.
