LEARNING TARGETS: As a result of today’s class you should be able to

  • Use the Vocab words Somber, Renegade and Vociferous
  • Explain the difference between PLOT and THEME
  • Make some guesses about how Steinbeck feels life might be different on the DREAM FARM than it is on the RANCH.
  • Be able to explain the concept of Rugged Individualism and why some people are critics of the idea.

IN CLASS

  • We did the vocab warmup with slides corresponding to the three words above.
  • Moved into the slide show about Ch. 3 in which we
    • We used the Three Little Pigs video to help understand plot vs. Theme.
    • Discussed ideas about the dream farm and how they might relate to Steinbeck’s theme.
    • Watched the videos on Rugged Individualism and discussed how they applied to the book.
