LEARNING TARGET: You should be able to make a connection between the big theme (think Atticus’ quote from back in Ch.2) and the situation with Mrs.  Dubose

  2.  Discussed Ch. 11
  3. Work Time:  could either do assignment on Docs on Pt. 1 of the novel (Due Friday) or read (Be to P. 193 by FRIDAY!!!)

  • Understand the key event of chapter 10
  • Be able to form a theory as to what we are supposed to take away from Ch. 11 and the episode with Mrs. Henrietta DuBose.

WARMUP: VOCAB

  1.  Who can tell me with what conference Grand Haven High School is AFFILIATED?
  2.  Assuming you are cremeated when you die, where would you like your ashes to be DISPERSED?
  3.  Name a MALEVOLENT character from a book or movie you know?
  4.  Who is the most SCRUPULOUS person you know.  Why do you say this?

IN CLASS:  Read ch. 6 and7 of TKAM.

HOMEWORK:  TO BE GRADED DRAFT OF ESSAY DUE TOMORROW.

  1. Students will be able to evaluate the importance of the Atticus’ quote on p. 39 (the one about seeing things through the other person’s eyes.
  2. Students will also be able to define EMPATHY.

  • Intro to Vocab Unit 4
  • Quick Quiz on TKAM chapter 2
  • C.E. went over general issues with essay drafts (NOTE: fewer than 50 percent of you turned them in even though you had four class to work on them–this is shameful).
  • Students read Ch. 3 of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD while C.E. conferenced about essays.

Working on Transcendentalism Essay

 

TRANSCENDENTALISM PAPERChoose a major theme of Transcendentalism and explain how it is developed in Dead Poet’s Society AND two of the following writings

  • Emerson “Nature”
  • Emerson “Self-Reliance”
  • Thoreau “Walden”
  • Thoreau “Civil Disobedience”
  • Whitman “The Learn’d Astronomer”

 

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR YOU TO SHOW US IN THIS PAPER

  1. That you understand elements of transcendentalism and show how it applies and connects to the world outside of the texts we read.
  2. That you can identify a theme and support it with evidence from multiple texts.
  3. That you can organize and express your thoughts in essay format.
