LEARNING TARGETS:  by the end of the day you should be able to

  • make preliminary “scouting reports” about the five characters we meet in Chapter 1
  • say something about the meanings of EAST and WEST in American literature/traditions.

In class:  did a brief group exercise on characters, had a quick lecture/presentation from C.E. (using the same presentation as yesterday with slides added)

IN CLASS:  We started with five practice vocab words (LAST five on the presentation posted last week).  Then class was broken into five groups:  each was assigned one of the following characters and given 10-12 minutes to come up with a list of five adjectives to describe their character–making sure they could support that idea in the text. Both second and third hour’s words were added to the slides in the master presentation.  Then groups reported out and we discussed as a class.  C.E. also added some lecture/new information into the discussion (see slides comparing Nick with Fitzgerald and talking about symbolic meanings of East and West).
